Do I need to have read Molly Gebrian's book?
No. Melopra explains each idea the first time it comes up, in a card you read once and dismiss, and can call back whenever you want it. You can use it without any background. That said, if you have never read Learn Faster, Perform Better, we would encourage you to. It is the full reasoning behind the method, and Melopra puts it into practice.
What instruments and levels is it for?
Any instrument, and even voice. Melopra tracks pieces and their sections, plus everything else you practice, in categories you name yourself, so it fits however you work. It is built for serious musicians, students through professionals, who want their practice time to actually stick.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web. One account covers all of them.
Does my progress sync across devices?
Yes. Your library, history, and schedule live in your account and are available everywhere. Plan on the web, practice from your phone at the piano, review on a tablet. It stays in sync.
Why are there no streaks or daily goals?
Because spacing and rest days are part of how memory consolidates. An app that rewarded an unbroken daily run would be working against its own method. Melopra shows you what is moving toward solid and how consistent you have been, without asking you to practice for the sake of a counter.
What is the difference between Solid and Secure?
Solid means a section is learned and has entered the spacing schedule. Secure means it has since come back clean through the full schedule, including the longer rests, and has dropped off as fully retained. Think of Solid as "learned" and Secure as "still there months from now."
Does missing a day or a week set me back?
Nothing resets. The clean sessions you have banked toward the next gap stay banked, and Melopra picks up where you left off and shows you what is due. A long time away does mean more comes due at once, but Melopra caps a plan so you get a session's worth, not an overwhelming pile. That said, the app can forgive a gap more easily than your memory can. Leave a piece for months rather than days and some of it will genuinely have faded, so it may need a little re-learning. For that there is Mark as rusty, which puts a piece back on the plan without losing your tempo, and Reset for starting it over properly. A day or a week off is well within the rhythm the app is built for.
Can I track exercises, not just pieces?
Yes, and Melopra tracks each kind of practice the way it actually needs. Pieces live in your Repertoire, which is always there, and run the full spaced-repetition schedule section by section. Everything else goes in a category you set to Tracked or Logged only. A Tracked category, like scales, studies, or ear training, reaches solid and is then kept fresh: it comes back after about a fortnight, and the gap widens each time it holds, up to around three months. That is Melopra's own lighter maintenance, still spaced repetition but not the full post-solid ladder a piece runs. A Logged only category, like sight-reading or improvisation, uses new material every time, so Melopra simply logs the time you spend, and it still counts toward your stats.
What are Fix it and Solidify?
They are two focused tools on the practice session screen, there when you want them. Fix it is for a section you cannot play yet: you mark each attempt clean or missed, and the number of misses sets your rep target. Solidify is for a section you can already play and want to make stick: six clean attempts. Both run in sets of three with a short pause between sets, and both need the reps consecutive, so a miss sends the count back to zero.
What is Performance Mode?
Learning a passage and performing it are different skills. Run a piece top to bottom often enough and each section becomes the cue for the next, so you can play the whole thing but cannot easily start in the middle or recover after a slip. Performance Mode breaks that by cycling your chosen sections one at a time, each played cold with no run-up. Serial keeps a fixed order, the gentler step. Interleaved shuffles on every pass, which is the real test. A section leaves the rotation once you have produced it cleanly five times. Melopra only offers sections you already know well, since the point is testing what's solid, not teaching something new.
How much does it cost?
Melopra is a paid app, and a single subscription covers every device. There is a 30-day free trial. See pricing for the current rates.
